The fifth volume of INU Humantas' book, "When I Started My Story: A Woman's Self-narrative," published by Humanities Research Institute Incheon National University, was selected as the 2024 Sejong Excellent Academic Book. It is the second time after the first volume of INU Translation Book, "The Natural History of Words: The Origin of Language" (written by Jang-Louis Desal and translated by Lee Hyun-joo), which was selected as the 2023 Sejong Excellent Academic Book.
Sejong Excellent Academic Books is a project that selects academic and liberal arts books every year by the Korea Publishing and Culture Industry Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and supplies them to libraries across the country. Selected for the Sejong Book Academic Division this year, "When I Started My Story: Women's Self-narrative" focuses on women who left records about themselves in the era of oppression and prejudice, and points out that the contents of the records were distorted or concealed by unstable movement between the public and private sectors not only in the day but also in the future. Professor Kim Jeong-kyung (Korean Studies Department at Incheon National University), the leading author of the book and the head of the Humanities Research Institute Incheon National University, said he wanted to read the possibility that women's private utterances and actions will have public power through their own narratives, and that voices that are newly thought or erased will be newly created/restored as alternative narratives.
Meanwhile, Humanities Research Institute Incheon National University has been planning and publishing the INU Humantas series with Humantas Publishing since 2018, and is expanding its business through the INU Translation Series from 2022. This selection of excellent academic books is expected to be an important opportunity for Humanities Research Institute Incheon National University to become a leading research institute that reads people and society through humanities discourse. Kim Jung-kyung, head of the institute, said, "We will continue to share humanities values with society and work harder to popularize humanities research."
